7 Things Every Fictional Character Needs

Roger’s got some good points here about characterization. I would add flaws and maybe a dark side, which could tie into the “road traveled” point, to this list as well.

Roger Colby, Novelist's avatarWriting Is Hard Work

I’m currently crafting some character biographies for a new series I’m writing and thought I would share a few things about how I go about creating characters.  I’ve gleaned this from several sources, from my days in college writing classes and from just figuring things out over time.

I use this format to write character biographies, and it helps me to create believable and vivid characters.

  1. purpose in lifePurpose in Life – This could also be called their motive for living or their reason for living.  What is it that drives this character to do the things that they do?  What makes them get out of bed in the morning?  All real people have this whether they are disgustingly evil or inherently good.  Don’t think in terms of extremes like that, though.  Try to think about  where on the spectrum of “purpose in life” they fall and how motivated they are to achieve…

A Different Way to Print a Book

I’m not sure publishing needs saving (not self-publishing, anyway) and I think this is a bit new yet to think it’s going to save anything, but who knows what’s in our future.

Always good to keep abreast of what’s coming down the pipe.images

How to Save Money on Editing

Sue has pointed writers to a good post about preparing your manuscript for editing using spell check.
Even though I am an editor, I am a writer too, so I want people to save a little money if they can and prepare their manuscript for editing.
But besides spell check (which frequently happens automatically as you type), I recommend to my clients that at least 2 other people read their ms before they have it professionally edited. It also helps if you ask your readers to look for grammar and punctuation errors, beside the other things you need help with.
Most people know the basics, and they can save the editor time (and thus your money) if they catch some of the simpler things for you. Happy writing!

Editing By Sue's avatarEditing--And More--By Sue

Why, you ask, would an editor give advice on how to save you money on her services? Won’t that make less money for her, you ask? In the short term, yes. But looking at the bigger picture, you’ll get a better editing job if I don’t have to worry as much about the small stuff. Therefore, I would love it if you’d read and take to heart this article on running spell check before submitting your work for editing. Thanks to libroediting.com for their wise words.

Dear Hay House, I’m Appalled.

And why is HMC having issues with Hay House’s Balboa Press? Because it is run by Author House and anything run by Author Solutions (and there are many: iuniverse, Xlibrus, Author House, Lulu, Albia, Hydra, Archway, Tafford…) is a scam to take advantage of authors.
I was also disappointed that a company like Hay House, which is known for helping people, has decided to go with such a shady company. I hope, if enough people complain to them, that they decide to drop Author Solutions, if for nothing else than the sake of their own reputation, let alone the people that depend on them for their wise words.

Dear Hay House,

I’m writing in regards to your self-publishing branch known as ‘Balboa Press.’ It has come to my attention that you provide packages for authors to self-publish their work with a chance of being picked up by Hay House. What a deal! Your hook is, “Follow the Footsteps of Louise Hay.”

Let’s Get Digital 2 Problems Fixed, New Kindles Launched & More

If you’re a Kindle lover, here is some news on the latest from Kindle and about David’s new edition of his book. He’s a wealth of information, and I’d recommend it.

How Reading Boosts Your Brainpower

Yes, I got this off a Senior Living Blog, and yes, I have my AARP card, though if you ask me in public, I’ll deny it, but I thought all those readers out there would appreciate reading about all the positives related to reading. Besides, it another very good excuse to stay up and read just a little more!

How Reading Boosts Your Brainpower.

Starting From Zero

David Guaghran spells out some very good things to do whether it’s your first book or your fifth. Also, don’t forget to do an ebook presale on Smashwords, and I’ve heard (but have not investigated) that Amazon is finally getting into the ebook presale biz. About time, Amazon. What took you so long?!

“Work is about a search for daily meaning as well as daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for astonishment rather than torpor; in short, for a sort of life rather than a Monday through Friday sort of dying.”
